Chennai, May 27 :  After Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit the street, DMK President M Karunanidhi, another key ally of UPA, would lead a protest demonstration here on May 30 against the recent petrol price hike.

The 88-year-old party patriarch would lead DMK's state-wide demonstration by taking part in the protest to be held at Saidapet.

The demonstration would also protest against the Tamil Nadu government for not reducing the increase in milk price, power tariff and bus fare effected by it in recent months.

Citing the growing public protests against the steepest ever increase in the price of petrol, the DMK had last week given the call for the protest demanding substantial decrease in the hike.

As Banerjee led a street march in Kolkata against the UPA Government of which her party is a constituent, Karunanidhi yesterday mounted pressure on the Centre asking it not to remain adamant and to ensure at least a partial rollback of the steep increase.

In a letter to his partymen earlier, Karunanidhi had asked them to ensure the success of the May 30 protest.

The DMK chief had also asked the Jayalalithaa government to lower the sales tax on petrol as was done during the previous DMK government.

Announcing the participation of Karunanidhi in the protest against both the central and state governments, DMK South Chennai District Secretary J Anbazhagan, MLA, in a statement here urged partymen to make it a success.
