Jammu: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today claimed to have support of over 55 MLAs in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly which witnessed a fractured mandate in the recently concluded assembly polls.

Mufti, after meeting Governor NN Vohra, said that her party, which bagged 28 seats in 87-member House, is in no hurry form government in the state.

Mufti's claim of over 55 MLAs is a clear cut indication that her party is having backing of BJP's 25 MLAs.

“We are not in hurry to form government. PDP has support of over 55 MLAs which is enough to form a government in the state. But forming government in this way will fulfil the people aspirations?” she said.

“The people have given PDP and BJP a huge responsibility,” she added.

The PDP leader also took the opportunity to remind the BJP about former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's principle of entering into an ‘unconditional' alliance.

"We want that the agenda of development and peace should be carried forward. We want Atal Bihari Vajpayee's peace process be carried to its logical conclusion," the PDP leader said.

Sources had earlier hinted at the possibility of PDP and BJP coming together to form a ‘stable' government with latter agreeing on the name of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for the top post in the state. Sources also revealed that the post of Deputy CM could go to the BJP with Nirmal Singh leading the race for the job.

PDP, with 28 MLAs, is presently the largest party in 87-member House followed by BJP's 25 legislators. The NC and Congress are having 15 and 12 MLAs, respectively.

An elected government has to be in place by 19 January, failing which Governor's rule will be imposed in the state.
