Whichever of the two reasons it was, it laid a strong foundation of what soon was going to be an epic love story.Nargis was dating super star Raj Kapoor before she met Sunil Dutt. The relationship was not the kind she had ever desired to be in. She did not share a great bond with her family either. Disconcerted with life, Nargis had even considered ending her life.It was while shooting for Mother India that her life was revived and reignited with a ray hope. Sunil (Balraj) Dutt, who was still a new arrival for Bollywood industry was an air of optimism for Nargis.Life seemed usual that day. Shooting was under its due course and a fire sequence was on the list. To everyone's surprise, while shooting, Nargis got trapped in the fire.Hopeless with life, Nargis did not make an attempt to come out.Sunil made a sudden rush and entered the fire to save Nargis. Who would have known the fire which had almost taken their lives would not only kindle a flame inside their hearts but also light up a hope to live again in Nargis.Both the actors had burns on their bodies. After few treatments, Nargis felt better but Sunil's condition was critical. His body was swallowed up in high fever and he could not remain conscious for long. Worried Nargis sat beside him all through the night, gave him wet bandages and fed him.Blaming herself for Sunil's terrible condition, Nargis did every possible thing to comfort him and bring him back to conscious.It was the couple's first personal rendezvous but the comfort was not that of a first meeting. It felt that they had known each other forever. Nargis was highly moved by Sunil's bravery and guts. Very low on expectations from life, Nargis was highly ecstatic to see someone put his life under danger for her.It was unlike her usual days where she was the one sacrificing herself for her family and her relationship.Soon after they both entered a couple of conversations, a stroke of realization hit Nargis. She comprehended that whatever she had for Raj was no where even close to what she was feeling for Sunil. Her sadness and despair was very swiftly replaced with the feeling of contentment and cheerfulness. She understood that Sunil was her Mr. dependable. As days passed and the two came closer, Sunil discovered how Nargis's relationship had been treating her. He also learnt Nargis's desired to end her life. These matters of heart were extremely new for Sunil. He had never been in a relation before. He saw longingness in Nargis's eyes, a wait for a man who would care for her and not treat her like an object. Sunil turned out to be the one. The couple was intrigued by the fact that they were just meant to be with each other. Very shortly marriage was on the cards. But Mother India was still in its production stages and hence the couple decided to zip up their love affair as it could have proved to be a controversy.Both made desperate attempts to keep it a clandestine love affair. For this reason not many people are aware how the couple met and where it all began. They met after sunset and wrote to each other.The couple tied a knot in 1958 and had three children, Sanjay, Priya and Namrata Dutt.After spending over two decades together, Nargis breathed her last in 1981. But just like she once wrote to Sunil that even after her death she would still be with him spiritually, Nargis indeed lived with Sunil till his last breath and probably even after that.
