Chennai, March 21: DMK president M. Karunanidhi said Wednesday that his party quit the UPA after India helped in watering down the US resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC in Geneva.

"The party has clearly stated that the Indian government has assisted in watering down the US resolution (against Sri Lanka)," he said.

"Further, the amendments to the US resolution suggested by the party were not considered by the central government. And at this stage, there is no possibility of amending the resolution," he told reporters here.

In these circumstances, the party decided to pull out of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance and the central government, the DMK chief said.

He said the DMK wanted two changes in the US resolution introduced in the 47-member UN Human Rights Council.

It wanted attacks on Tamils by the Sri Lankan military to be treated as "war crimes" and "genocide" during the final stages of the war that destroyed the Tamil Tigers in 2009.

Karunanidhi said as per the information reaching him, the US resolution amended four times did not contain any strong words against the island nation's government.

He said the deadline for giving in writing amendments in the US resolution is over and it should also be noted that many parties are not in favour of the resolution in the Indian parliament.

Queried about Finance Minister P.Chidambaram's comment that the government is not aware of the reasons as to why DMK changed its position between the night of March 18 and the next morning, Karunanidhi said: "Everybody knows about the two-and-half-hour meeting with the union ministers March 18."

On March 18, Chidambaram along with Defence Minister A.K.Antony and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad met Karunanidhi at his residence.

According to Karunanidhi, after the meeting Azad told reporters that the deliberations of the meeting will be conveyed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

There were no reports in the next day's (March 19) papers quoting Azad on the DMK's demands of passing a resolution in parliament or that attempts will be made to bring amendments to the US resolution in the UNHRC, Karunanidhi remarked.

Karunanidhi also condemned some media outlets for distorting his statement regarding the reasons for the DMK's pullout from the UPA.
