Kolkata, Mar 24: Independent legislator Wilson Champramary, who had won the 2011 assembly polls with support from the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) from Kalchini in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, Saturday joined the Trinamool Congress.
The lawmaker has been offered associate membership of Trinamool, party general secretary Mukul Roy told media persons here.
"His joining the Trinamool will give a boost to our organization in northern West Bengal," Roy said.
Champramary said he would work for strengthening peace and development in the foothills and plains of north Bengal.
He called on Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Writers' Buidlings before formally joining the state's ruling party.
"Not only Champramary, political activists from all other parties across the state are joining our party," said Roy.
The lawmaker has joined the Trinamool at a time when the relations between the state's ruling party and the GJM have nosedived after the chief minister's visit to Darjeeling in January.
Greeted by pro-Gorkhaland slogans from GJM activists, Banerjee had hit back saying she could be "rough and tough" which further angered the GJM.
