New Delhi: After Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, the BJP-led NDA government is mulling to double the salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs).
According to an Indian Express report, the government has proposed increasing the monthly salary of MPs from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh and constituency allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.
The report also includes doubling the secretarial assistance plus office allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.
If the proposal, currently with the Ministry of Finance, is accepted, each MP will get Rs 2.8 lakhs salary per month.
Recently, the AAP government in Delhi hiked the basic monthly salary of MLAs by a whopping 400 per cent. The monthly package of MLAs was increased from Rs 88,000 to Rs 2.10 lakh per month, while their annual travelling allowance was increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh per year.
The proposal to increase salary of MPs also mentioned that the basic pension should be increased from Rs 20,000 per month to Rs 35,000. Also, those who have served for more than 5 years should get an additional Rs 2,000 for every year instead of Rs 1500 earlier.
If Ministry of Finance agrees with the proposals, Parliament will then amend the Salary, Allowance and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill.
In the Budget this year, the Ministry had allocated Rs 295.25 crore for Lok Sabha MPs and Rs 121.96 crore for Rajya Sabha MPs for expenses.
When Parliament is in session, MPs get a daily allowance of Rs 2,000. They are also reimbursed for 34 flight trips and unlimited rail and road travel.
