Guwahati: Assam's first time Congress MP and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's son, Gaurav Gogoi, has selected martyr Swahid Kushal Konwar's village Gondhokoroi in Golaghat district for making it a model village.
Gogoi wants to make Gondhokoroi 100 per cent organic and his plan include involving the school children of the village in growing organic vegetables in their school playground.
Gogoi announced today that he would invite international NGOs to provide organic certification to the growers and Self Help Groups (SHGs) will be formed to produce village level vermin-composting units.
Young model farmers will be identified and they will be send to Thailand to study modern cultivation, he added. “My dream is to have several organic model villages across the state.
This is my way of paying tribute to the sacrifice of Swahid Kushal Konwar”, the first-time MP said about his plans on adopting the model village.
Kushal Konwar was a freedom fighter from Assam and was hanged during last phase of the Quit India Movement of 1942-43 for his suspected role in the derailment of a military train in which several British and American soldiers were killed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) on October 11 asking MPs to coordinate convergence of existing rural development schemes in the village using existing schemes' funds and their MP Local Area Development Fund (MPLAD).
MPs have been asked to focus on and develop one village from their constituency as a model village by 2016, and two more by 2019 covering over 2,500 villages of 6 lakh villages country-wide.
