Kolkata, Jun 15: Unfazed by the isolation after Congress-led UPA named Pranab Mukherjee as its Presidential nominee, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today said her party remained firm on the candidature of A P J Abdul Kalam and said “the game has just begun”.
“We are firm on the candidature of Kalam. He is the fittest candidate. We are not shifting from our stand of what we have announced earlier,” Banerjee told PTI at the state secretariat.
“He is a man of high stature in India and most respected nationally and internationally,” she said adding “I never bow my head to anyone.”
Asked if she thought that she was cheated by Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, Banerjee replied “I cannot say so. He is a senior politician.”
To a question if she was disappointed by today's developments in SP's stand, “what I said in the morning, I stand by it. I don't deviate. Rest I will say tomorrow because things have only started. Now a lot of things will happen.
To another question on Mulayam's change of stand, Banerjee said “I have said. I won't say anything more. In my life, I do what I say and if someone thinks the game is over, it's not that”.
Asked if she would quit UPA, an angry Mamata shot back “it is not a press conference”. Asked if she was disappointed by today's development, Banerjee said “no, it is not that”.
