Chennai: Economic freedom is foundation of independence and the government is taking all steps for the upliftment of the poor, said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa here on Saturday.
She also said the state is expected to get an investment of over Rs.100,000 crore at the global investor meet to be held here next month.
Unfurling the national flag on Independence Day, she said: "Economic freedom is the foundation of all types of freedom. For the past four years the government has been taking several steps for the upliftment of the poor."
She listed out the various social welfare measures implemented by her government in the field of education and other spheres.
Jayalalithaa also announced increased monthly pension for the freedom fighters and their families.
She also gave away the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award to space scientist Valarmathi.
The award was instituted this year in memory of late former president Abdul Kalam.
