Dehradun: A special CBI court in Dehradun on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to politician and former MP DP Yadav in connection with the murder of Mahendra Singh Bhati in 1992.
Earlier, Yadav surrendered before a special CBI court in connection with the Bhati murder case.
Soon after Yadav surrendered in the court of special CBI judge Amit Kumar Sirohi, he was sent to Dehradun jail, his counsel Rupendra Bhandari said.
The CBI court had issued an arrest warrant against Yadav when he did not appear in the court on February 28 on medical grounds.
DP Yadav, Pal Singh, Karan Yadav and Praneet Bhati had been convicted in the case under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
Bhati and his close friend Udai Prakash Arya were gunned down by armed assailants on September 13, 1992 at the Dadri railway crossing. Another person, OP Kayal, was injured. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the high profile case in 1993 and had submitted chargesheet against seven persons, three of whom died during prolonged trial.
In 2000, the Supreme Court directed transfer of the case to Dehradun CBI court after doubts were expressed about fair trial in UP where Yadav was an influential politician.
It is also worth a note that DP Yadav's son Vikas Yadav is also a convicted murderer in Nitish Katara murder case. He was also associated with the famous Jessica Lal murder case, in which he was convicted of criminal offenses for obstruction of justice.
