New Delhi: Top Congress sources on Monday evening disclosed that party general secretary Digvijay Singh may be asked to take on BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi parliamentary constituency.
The sources said, party president Sonia Gandhi has already sounded Digvijay Singh in this connection.
Digvijay Singh, a known RSS and BJP baiter, has been consistently attacking Modi in his speeches for the last two years.
Congress leaders were finding it difficult to field a candidate to match the stature of Modi in Varanasi.
The party leaders then zeroed in on their general secretary Digvijay Singh, who they said, had the requisite standing to take on Modi.
The announcement is expected to be made in a day or two.
If Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal enters the fray, it will become an interesting battle between the three, all of whom are outsiders for the denizens of Varanasi.
