Kolkata, March 22: An adjournment motion mooted by Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra on attacks on constitutional institutions and democratic values in West Bengal was admitted by state assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay Thursday and will be debated today.

The matter, to be discussed for two hours, is the first adjournment motion admitted in the house since the Trinamool Congress government of Mamata Banerjee rode to power in 2011.

"To end the violence, this House urges the State government to take all necessary constitutional and administrative steps to provide peace and security and protect the democratic rights of the people," the motion read.

Mishra said the state's educational institutions have slipped into utter lawlessness.

Later in the day, Left Front members staged a walk-out, protesting the manner in which the state government passed two bills concerning West Bengal cooperative societies.

The two legislations were tabled in the assembly during the day and passed, with the opposition protesting that the two bills relating to amendment in a particular legislation could not be passed on a single day.

"The state government seems in a hurry. It is using its majority in the house to pass legislations forcibly," Mishra said.

He said the state government needed to pass one legislation, and then take the governor's consent before tabling the other legislation.
