Kolkata, Mar 3: After the Supreme Court today quashed the appointment of P J Thomas as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, CPI(M) Politburo member Biman Bose said he should have resigned much earlier.
"This man should have stepped down much before without waiting for the Supreme Court to quash his appointment," Bose told reporters here.
The CPI(M) leader said now, with the apex court quashing Thomas' appointment as CVC, it would provide "relief" to the Prime Minister as his name was "almost being involved" in the matter.
"Prime minister is an economist and gentleman who was forcibly dragged into politics and whose name was nearly being implicated with Thomas'," Bose said.
He said the left parties had been persistently demanding that the Centre ask Thomas to resign on corruption charges.
CPI-M Central Committee member Mohammad Selim earlier said, "It is unfortunate that as an academician, economist, good bureaucrat and good prime minister, Manmohan Singh has to defend all sorts of dishonest acts". PTI
