New Delhi:  A total of 12 union ministers and 44 state ministers, elected in the past two years, have self declared criminal cases against them, according to an analysis released here Friday.

A dozen of the total 45 union ministers have charges of criminal cases against them while seven have serious criminal cases, the Association of Democratic Reforms release said.

As many as 44 of the total 194 state ministers have declared criminal cases in their affidavits while 26 state ministers have serious criminal cases against them.

Telangana has the maximum 90 percent ministers involved in criminal cases followed by Andhra Pradesh with 56 percent, Karnataka 34 percent and Odisha 27 percent.

Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim are the states where no minister has a criminal case against him.

In terms of serious criminal cases, Telangana again leads with 80 percent of its ministers, followed by Rajasthan with 25 percent and Andhra Pradesh with 22 percent.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu have also declared criminal cases against themselves, said the release.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court had put the onus on PM and CMs for taking a call on whether these tainted ministers should be dropped or retained.
