Kolkata, Oct 15: The Communist Party of India (CPI) is as yet undecided on its stand if a no-confidence motion is moved in parliament against the United Progressive Alliance government, party general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy said here Sunday.
However, it would vote against Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on any motion introduced in parliament.
"Whoever brings a no-confidence motion, will not succeed. And if the no-confidence motion is defeated, the Congress will say that parliament has endorsed our decisions on FDI in retail trade and other (economic reforms). So, we have to think about it," Reddy told a media meet.
In such a situation, the CPI would work out its political strategy very carefully.
"It is to be discussed and decided whether the numbers are there to defeat the government. If they are, we are for a no-confidence motion. But, it will only help the UPA if they do not have a majority," Reddy said.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had recently announced that her party was considering moving a no-confidence motion against the UPA government in the winter session of parliament.
However, Reddy said he would prefer a motion against FDI in retail.
"On the issue of FDI in retail trade, leaders of many political parties, including (DMK chief) M. Karunanidhi, (BSP supremo) Mayawati, (Samajwadi Party president) Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee are in agreement," he said.
"But when it comes to a no-confidence motion against the Congress-led government, all of them may not vote on the same side," Reddy said.
