The CPI(M) on Saturday demanded the resignation of Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari on moral grounds, in the wake of reports regarding an alleged sex scandal.
"Given the unsavoury allegations, it is unbecoming of him to continue. He should immediately resign on grounds of morality," CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury told reporters.
Responding to questions on the issue, he said his party's state unit had already demanded Tiwari's resignation.
Though the Centre has sought a report from Andhra Pradesh Government on the matter, Tiwari "should not continue after such serious charges have been made," Yechury said.
The party affiliate All India Democratic Women's Association demanded "immediate removal" of Tiwari from the post of Governor, saying "if even a fraction of the charges being levelled against him are true, his place is behind bars."
The AIDWA also demanded a thorough investigation into "all aspects of the allegations including collusion of other government servants and officers and also the granting of favours to those accused of supplying young girls."
AIDWA President Subhashini Ali has written a letter to this effect to President Pratibha Patil. PTI
