Hyderabad: The Congress will today celebrate ‘Telangana Day' on a grand scale to mark the UPA-II government's announcement in 2009 inside the Parliament to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh for the creation of separate statehood Telangana.
The day also commemorates Congress president Sonia Gandhi's 67th birthday.
The party leaders said, though the new state was formed only on June 2, 2014, the celebration would be a part of Sonia's birthday gift to the people of Telangana.
Former home minister P Chidambaram had on December 9, 2009, announced inside the Parliament that the Centre will create a Telangana state respecting the aspirations of the people.
The party has decided to organise special programmes involving people at several levels across the state to highlight the importance of this ‘historical' day.
