New Delhi: Congress took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his address to school children Friday noting that teachers should allow students to develop their personalities and not impose theirs own on them.

Party spokesperson Salman Khurshid said Congress has no issue with the Prime Minister addressing the students across the country but felt the occasion could have been utilised to make the day more substantive for teachers.

Congratulating teachers and students on the Teacher's Day, he said the occasion needed to be used "more substantially" and not as an opportunity to "project".

"I don't think the cause of the teachers has been adequately addressed. There are teachers who are in very very difficult situation. It could have been a substantive moment to reach out to the teachers substantially and announce something for them," he said.

Khurshid made light of Modi's answer to a student suggesting that he would remain Prime Minister for 10 years.

"He has only said this to children...," Khurshid said suggesting that who knows what has fate in store, five years or five months down the line".

Former Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari also took potshots at the the Prime Minister over his address.

"If Teachers' Day can been turned into 'Pravachan Divas', children must be shuddering at the thought what would happen on Children's day Drums?" he said on Twitter.

The reference was obviously to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi playing drums during his Japan visit.

In another tweet, Tewari said, "if this is true that PM said 'Jo kuch nahin banta woh teacher banta hai" could there be a more unfortunate compliment to guru's their day.
