Congress on Monday condemned the unparliamentary remarks of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, saying there was no place for abusive language in politics.

"We condemn the language (of Gowda) if it was used. There is no place for abuse in politics," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the party was against such politics and it was the responsibility of all political parties to keep the dignity of politics high.

Singhvi said Congress is for a strong and vigilant opposition and the party has never hesitated to criticise the policies of the BJP in Karnataka.

"But we will never follow the politics of abuse. Such words have no place in a democratic country," he said.

On BJP criticising Gowda's statement, Singhvi said it was important for the BJP too to condemn it in the same manner.

Gowda's remarks against Yeddyurappa came over the controversial Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Project.

The former Prime Minister admitted using provocative words "bloody bastard" against the Karnataka Chief Minister yesterday but said he had withdrawn it soon thereafter. PTI
