New Delhi, Jul 25: Terming the ‘Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill' as anti-Hindu, the VHP today said the legislation defies Constitution, which calls for equality before law.

“Everywhere in the world, a person is innocent till proven guilty... This government is bringing a law under which a person accusing a Hindu of committing communal crime will have no responsibility to prove his allegation, but the accused will have to prove himself innocent,” VHP general secretary Praveen Togadia said while addressing a protest rally at Jantar Mantar.

“It enables non-Hindus to commit crimes with impunity while rendering Hindus incapable of defending themselves in the event of attacks from members of a minority community,” he said.

Dubbing the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council, which drafted the bill, as “National Aurangzeb Council”, he said the VHP and other similar organisation will oppose the bill tooth and nail and not allow it to be passed in Parliament.

“There are two internationally accepted principles of justice - the law of the land shall be applicable to all and a person shall be considered innocent unless proven guilty. The proposed bill goes against these principles and aims at paving the way for a draconian law,” he said. The activists later burnt an effigy of the central government and submitted a memorandum to the President in this regard. The said similar protests will be organised in other parts of Delhi between July 26 and July 31. PTI
