New Delhi:  BJP had something to cheer about today after its massive defeat in Delhi Assembly polls as the party swept local bodies elections in Assam and expressed hope that it will come to power in the state next year.

“The results clearly points to the fact that the people of Assam have made up their minds to outst the incumbent Congress government and install development-oriented BJP government,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said here.  He said BJP has sweeped the local bodies election in Assam held on February 9, by winning 21 municipal boards and 24 town committees.

“We thank the people of Assam for their support. This is indeed a clean sweep by BJP in Assam. These results are of prime importance as Assam goes to Assembly poll in 2016,” he said.

Compared to 2009 elections, in the 74 urban local bodies polls 72 per cent people voted for BJP against 61 per cent last time. Of the 74 urban bodies, polls were held in 32 municipal boards and 42 town committees.  He said BJP which previously held only 5 seats in the municipal boards but this time had won 21 seats. Of the 42 town committees, BJP had 11 seats previously, this time BJP has won 24 seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Assam BJP for their commendable performance in the municipal polls held across the state.
