Chidambaram needs to be reborn to match my record, says Yashwant Sinha

New Delhi: BJP on Monday attacked UPA for leaving the economy in the "worst" crisis" and said it was committed to a simplified tax regime and will, if voted to power, try to hasten implementation

Sinha said he was yet to receive answers to 18 questions on the state of Indian economy that he posed to Chidambaram on March 30. "Instead what I received was an angry response from Chidambaram and a personal attack on me," he said.

Sinha also suggested the new government would need to rein in food inflation at the earliest and ensure there is no shortage of foodgrains.

To a question on his role in a possible NDA government at the Centre, Sinha said "will it be my choice? I will make my choice when I come to the bridge."

Sinha had been a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government where he held the portfolios of Finance and External Affairs.

The former Finance Minister did not agree that foreign investors are wary of the NDA government that does not favour FDI in retail. "What foreign investors are looking for is ease of doing business rather than how much foreign investment we allow in which sector," he said.

He suggested the new government would do well to adopt the strategy adopted by NDA dispensation to handle the drought of 2002 by liberally releasing stocks of foodgrains.

"The new government should launch an aggressive attack on food inflation," he said.
