Karuna Chennai, Welcoming the Group of Ministers decision to introduce caste census from biometric stage of enumeration, DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday hailed it as a historic development. Noting that such a census was being undertaken after 80 years, he said it was more proof that the UPA government would not neglect the opinion of Opposition parties.
It would also help Tamil Nadu implement the interim judgement of the Supreme Court on 69 per cent reservation to certain sections of society in the state, he said, writing in the party organ Murasoli.
The Supreme Court on July 13, while granting protection for continuance for one more year of a law providing Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes 69 per cent reservation in jobs and education, had asked the state Backward Classes Commission to revisit the reservation issue on the basis of the quantifiable data in respect of the communities in question. If the Commission wanted to exceed the 50 per cent ceiling while refixing the quota it could take into consideration the parameters laid down by the Supreme Court in the Mandal case judgement, it said.
