New Delhi, Sep 11: The BJP Monday criticized Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for linking birth rate among Muslims in Assam to illiteracy and said the Congress has to take blame for lack of education among the community.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said that Gogoi government had been unable to check illegal infiltration from Bangladesh and was making strange statements.
"If according to Gogoi, there is lack of education, then Congress is responsible. These are views of Congress concerning Muslims," he said.
Hussain said that if any BJP leader had made similar remarks, "the so-called secular brigade" would have created a ruckus.
Gogoi in a TV interview dismissed suggestions that illegal migration from Bangladesh had led to high growth of Muslim population in the state and said the birth rate was more due to low rate of literacy in the community.
