Akola: BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won the mayoral election of Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC) here returning to power after a span of five years.
The Congress-led NCP was ousted from AMC with victory of BJP's Ujwala Deshmukh who was elected as the Mayor, while Shiv Sena's Vinod Mapari was elected as the deputy mayor in the election held yesterday, official sources said.
BJP nominee bagged 37 votes in the house of 73 corporators, while Mapari secured 38 votes. Deshmukh was elected as the mayor as the seat was reserved for open category of women corporator for this term.
The initial damage was caused to ruling Congress-NCP alliance by Prakash Ambedkar-led BRPBM over decision on nominating candidates.
Amdedkar's only lone corporator voted against Congress, while NCP's three members and one member of MNS also voted for the BJP nominee.
Independent candidate Hazrabi and Samajwadi Party's Nakir Khan secured eight votes each, while in a humiliation for Congress, its nominee Safiya Khan for mayor's post could get a single vote.
