With a Sharjah court recently sentencing 17 Indians, mostly Punjabis, to death for killing a Pakistani, Congress in Punjab on Saturday  lambasted the Badal government for its alleged "insensitivity" to people of the state facing problems abroad.

"The Badal government has utterly failed in taking steps for the security of Punjabis living abroad and providing them legal assistance in times of need," Punjab Congress spokesman Fateh Jung Bajwa said. Despite Punjabis facing lots of hardships in countries where they have gone to earn, the state Government has remained "insensitive" to them, he said.

Referring to the state government sending letters to the Prime Minister after a Shariah court in Sharjah awarded death penalty to 17 Indians, including 16 Punjabis, he said its responsibility did not end there. The state government should send its own delegation to Sharjah to chalk out a plan for bailing out Punjabis on death row there, he said.

Accusing the Badal government of having a lackadaisical approach towards problems of Punjabis in foreign lands, Bajwa said it had also miserably failed in rendering appropriate help to Punjabis when they were being attacked in Australia, France and Spain. PTI
