RS: And now the BJP is saying that there is a Modi wave and we'll win even this election. AJ: The signal that we are getting clearly shows that there is a big acceptance of Modi's name and BJP.RS: But you talked about same kind of signals when BJP had given the slogan of ‘India Shining'.AJ: every election writes its own story. 16 May is not very far off. You'll ask me same question that day and I'll have to face them. RS: Forget about me, your own party leader Murali Manohar Joshi says there is no ‘Modi wave', it's only ‘BJP wave'.AJ: See, we have explained it again and again. Now look at these terms – Modi led BJP, Vajpayee led BJP, Rajiv Gandhi led Congress. Now we can't find any difference between Rajiv Gandhi and Congress. Whoever is the top leader of the campaign gets the credit or discredit. RS: And here in Amritsar, somebody told me that Advani ji is like the fufa ji (uncle) in a Baraat (wedding party) who has been asked to sit in a bus instead of car.AJ: Advani ji is one of those persons who made the party. And we definitely respect his words. We have given him that respect. We gave him the choice of deciding whether he wants to go to Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. If he wants to go to Lok Sabha then which seat he wants to contest. What did the Congress do? Who was Fufa ji? It was Sitaram Kesari. One day he went to the CWC meeting. He was physically evicted of the room and was told that they had changed the president. Just see the difference. RS: The people of Amritsar have another question for Modi ji. He had promised that the case that the Gujarat govt filed against Punjab farmers will be withdrawn but that is yet to be fulfilled. AJ: Let me explain one thing. Who made this law that is related to land? The law was made by the previous Congress government in Gujarat. Under this law, many cases were filed against people belonging to different faiths – Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and others. When the matter reached the Supreme Court, the farmers of Punjab raised the matter. Prakash Singh Badal first spoke to Modi ji and then he spoke to me. After that, both Badal ji and I spoke to Modi ji. And then he came to Punjab and announced that I'll get this case settled and not a single Punjab farmer will have to leave Gujarat. The matter came to an end. The farmers are not unhappy today because they have got the assurance that they'll not have to leave the land. And they should not leave the land at all. I believe that this law, made by the Congress govt, has to be scrapped. RS: You are both a lawyer and a politician. Can you give the assurance that you'll get this law scrapped? AJ: Obviously, this will be the stand of the state government there. And now it has become my duty to plead the case of people related to Punjab anywhere in the world. Audience: Both your and Navjot Singh Sidhu's name came up for Amritsar seat. He considers you like his father. But why is he unhappy and not campaigning for you?AJ: See, I was talking to him for last few months and I wanted him to contest LS elections this time again- either from Amritsar or from any other place if some people had differences with him here. I had shortlisted three other constituencies for him and even party president asked him to contest. He said that he was busy this time and that he'll work for the party but he'll not contest himself. He has contributed immensely to the party. Even today he is campaigning. It's very clear in my mind that we have to use him in future as well. He told me afterwards that he does not want to come here. I wanted him to come here. But the kind of relation that we share, we have not discussed internal things in public. I have decided that I'll respect his emotions and I have never made it an issue.RS: Should we conclude that he is the Fufa ji of this baraat?AJ: definitely not. Even today, we both use only the language of love and affection for each other. We both have respected this relationship. I have respected his desire of not coming here and because of this there is no question of our relationship getting soured. Audience: Husbands are committing suicide every 7 minutes due to laws like 498, anti dowry law, domestic violence law etc.AJ: Se, we should not change the system because of personal experience. I have slight difference with you on this. Even today, women are subjected to domestic violence in our homes and villages. I have seen this as a lawyer. Now some of the laws have become harsh. Rapes have not stopped even after stringent law coming up in the aftermath of Delhi rape case. We should not make these laws soft just because injustice was done in some cases. We should leave some functioning to judiciary only. If the experience says that the laws are harsh then let the parliament take care of this. We should not give any kneejerk reaction by saying that rape laws should be made soft. Irrespective of whether I get votes or not, I must say without any hesitation that I'm not in favour of soft punishment for rape. RS: Sonia Gandhi said on TV that if the BJP comes to power then ‘Bhartiyata' will be lost. AJ: I had replied to that. What is Bhartiyata? When Pakistan snatched one-third of Kashmir during Nehru's time then there was no concern for Bhartiyata. When China snatched part of Kashmir, there was no concern for Bhartiyata. When we lost 1962 war, there was no concern for Hindustaniyat? When emergency was imposed and people were sent behind bars, when 1984 riots took place then there was no concern for Bhartiyata? When all these scandals took place, you don't care. But when BJP comes to power then it's a threat to ‘Bhartiyata' because there is only one family to rule this country. What is this that if an opposition party comes to power then it becomes a threat to Bhartiyata. I wish those who are under impression that only they were born to rule this country, live longer so that they could see that even opposition can rule this nation. RS: This question arises when BJP leaders like Amit Shah call for revenge. AJ: See, even EC realized they had taken a wrong decision. What was the full statement? That this government is bad and has committed wrongs and therefore take revenge through ballot. Not through violence. And in a democracy, what is wrong in calling for revenge through vote? Every opposition party says that government has not done well and you should take revenge through vote in elections.RS: Leaders like Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh say that if our govt is formed, Robert Vadra will be put behind bars. AJ: Both Modi ji and I have made it clear that we would want investigative agencies to work impartially. No guilty should be spared and nobody should be arrested for political reasons only.RS: Forget about other leaders, you wrote in your blog that if illicit relationships of Congress leaders are exposed then they will be in trouble. We don't expect such language from you.AJ: See, I wrote it deliberately. Everybody has to file affidavit while filing nomination papers. Narendra Modi also did the same. Earlier, there were provisions that you could leave some columns blank. In September 2013, SC said that you can't leave any column blank and you have to provide answer to every query. When it came to the column that asked about the assets of your family members, Modi ji wrote the name of his wife but mentioned that assets are not known. It was a child marriage which was not recognized and it can happen in villages 40-50 years back. Now Rahul Gandhi made it an issue and started speaking on this. I wrote in reply to that if you are considering the disclosure of a legitimate relationship wrong that was not acted upon then ask your party leaders who bring their wives only on nomination days but otherwise are living in other relationships. The voter also has the right to know about those relationships. Some wise man advised Rahul that he was treading on a wrong path and that it will land him into trouble. And the controversy came to an end with that.RS: You keep leveling allegations against Rahul and Sonia. For 5 years, you were accusing PM of not speaking. I'm saying this because he is from Amritsar. His media adviser said that the PM spoke every third day in last 10 years. He gave 1,198 speeches during his tenure.AJ: These are the speeches that are remembered only by the person who made them and not by the listeners. I have commented on this in my blof and I have written that the PM can walk on the snow and yet not leave foot prints behind.RS: His complaint is that you don't listen to him when he speaks outside and you don't allow him to speak inside house. And then you call him Mr Maun Singh.AJ: See, it's not that he has not spoken in parliament. He spoke a lot. Whenever he speaks I don't allow anybody from my side to interrupt him. We listen to him. The question is that the post of PM is such that when he speaks, he inspires the entire nation. But if you have to just read a paper then it's better to write an article and put it on website. People will read it.RS: I will give you the credit for the fact that PM smiles only on occasions when you speak in the house.AJ: See, I want to confess that I have a weakness that I don't make personal attacks. But at times, we do say things while joking or in sarcasm, that are necessary and I'm happy that he listens. I would like to appreciate him for one thing. Actaully I will appreciate both Narasimha Rao (as he was the PM) and Manmohan singh (who was his FM). Manmohan Singh's tenure as Finance Minister was more fruitful compared to his tenure as Prime Minister. I recently advised him that since he was heading towards retirement now, he should write about his Finance Minister days.RS: Does it mean that if Modi becomes PM and you get a responsible position in the govt then Manmohan Singh will be consulted on economic matters.AJ: I'll tell you one thing. When I was the commerce Minister, there were a lot of issues on WTO. When things used to become serious, I had to seek PM's advise. There were two other persons who I used to consult both before and after attending any international conference were Dr Manmohan singh and Pranab Babu. And whatever decisions we took, like drawing line on concessions, were taken with advice from these two people. RS: You enlightened me on history. I want to know about future.AJ: The people who have held so many positions, we may have differences with them, but it will be a good system if a former PM guides the nation. (Concluded)
