Amethi Lok Sabha constituency can be easily termed as the fiefdom of the Congress party. Sanjay Gandhi won this seat in 1980. Rajiv Gandhi won this seat in 1981, 1984, 1989 and 1991. After Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, the family loyalist Satish Sharma won the seat twice in 1991 and 1996. In 1998, another family loyalist Dr Sanjay Singh turned a rebel and won the seat on a BJP ticket.
