Dumpy started off his career with Congress and won from Haldwani assembly constituency in 1980.
In 1987, he won from Kashipur seat on the ticket Sanjay Vichar Manch.
In 1996, he joined BSP and won from Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency in 1998 and 2008. In 2004, he lost from Bareily Lok Sabha seat while in 2009, he lost from Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency.
