Shrugging off the series of electoral reverses, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Thursday asserted her party would bounce back and capture power in the next year Assembly elections.
Putting up a brave front days after her party lost deposit in the March 27 Pennagaram byelection, she said AIADMK had faced similar situations even during the period of its founder M G Ramachandran. But not disheartened by it, he strove hard to bring the party back to power.
Speaking to reporters here after visiting a party worker who attempted self-immolation reportedly upset over the Pennagaram bypoll outcome, she said even the ruling DMK had lost deposit in the 2001 election from the same constituency.
"The AIADMK cadre should not resort to such suicide attempts... The party will certainly capture power in the next assembly election," she said after calling on Thangavelu (50), seriously injured after setting himself ablaze yesterday, at a private hospital.
DMK-Congress combine has maintained its winning streak since the 2006 assembly polls romping home in all the 11 byelections held subsequently. In Pennagaram, AIADMK finished third behind PMK. "Thangavelu is one of the loyal workers of the AIADMK and the party respects such workers," she said.
She gave a solatium of Rs one lakh to Thangavelu's wife and said the party would bear his entire medical expenses. PTI
