New Delhi, Apr 11: Former BJP ideologue K N Govindacharya has predicted that party leader L K Advani may finally emerge as the party's prime ministerial candidate, because, according to him, Narendra Modi, can, at best, work as a "paperweight".
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the three-day convention of his Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan, Govindacharya said: "There is presently chaos in the party leadership over the prime ministerial candidate. Modi can, at best, be a paperweight (stablizing factor) in such a situation, but if a comparison is made between Modi and Advani, the latter can be the person to bring about a truce in the party."
He sought to dismiss the impression that Modi was being sought to be projected as prime ministerial candidate by the RSS.
“The RSS leadership has already clarified that it was BJP's responsibility to declare its PM nominee and only the party should take a decision on the issue,” Govindarcharya said, adding that “he does not believe that Modi is a RSS protégé”.
On the present political situation, he said, people are fed up with the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, but the BJP appeared to be shying away from playing the role of Opposition.
Stressing the need for cleansing the political system, he said no party seemed interested in taking up the cause of the poor.
Politics, in fact, has become a means to acquire wealth and power, he said, adding, in such a situation, India badly needed an alternative political system.
