New Delhi: The number of Indians who lost their lives in stampede in Saudi Arabia's Mina during haj has risen to 35, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed today.

Sushma also assured that the Indian Embassy officials are providing all the support to the family of victims who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The second biggest tragedy to hit the annual pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia took place on 24th Sep due to a sudden surge in the number of pilgrims heading to Jamarat for symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing pebbles against three stone walls.

The unfortunate event has so far cost 769 lives.

The crush occurred after two massive lines of pilgrims converged on each other from different direction at an intersection close to the five-storey Jamarat Bridge in Mina for symbolic stoning of the devil.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman ordered a safety review and a "revision" of the Haj organisation.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in New York questioned whether the Saudi government could be trusted with the responsibility of overseeing the Haj.

King Salman ordered the formation of a committee to probe the incident during the five-day pilgrimage in which around two million people from more than 180 countries took part. From India, 1.5 lakh pilgrims performed Haj.
