Chandigarh: As many as 228 candidates have entered the fray so far for elections to the six municipal corporations and by-elections to three wards in Punjab with the filing of nominations set to close tomorrow, the Election Commission said.
“The total number of wards for which election is scheduled on February 22 are 303 and till today 228 nominations have been filed,” an official spokesman of Punjab Election Commission said.
There are 50 wards each in SAS Nagar Mohali, Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Moga, Pathankot and Phagwara Municipal Corporations.
The nominations in these wards are 28, 44, 10, 51, 57 and 36 respectively, the official said. “February 11 (tomorrow) is the last day for the filling of nominations, he added.
Besides the six corporations, three wards, two in Patiala and one in Jalandhar, will go for a by-election. The two by-poll-bound wards in Patiala till today received no nomination while the lone Jalandhar ward for the has received two nominations, the official said.
Elections to six municipal corporations, 123 municipal councils and nagar panchayats are scheduled to be held on February 22 and February 25.
