Located in the national capital of India, it provides a breeding ground for budding politicians of the country

DUSU elections are considered to be one of the most high profile in the country as it provides a gateway to local and national politics

The University of Delhi has a long history of student political activity.

India TV brings to you the list of 10 politicians who graduated from Delhi University:

1. Narendra Modi

The current Prime Minsiter secured a bachelor of arts degree from Delhi University and masters of arts degree from Gujarat University. The BA degree,issued by the Delhi University in 1979, says that Modi completed his graduation in 1978.

The prime minister got 165 out of 400 in first year, In second year he secured 121 out of 400 (failed). In 1977 he applied for supplementary exam and secured 473/1200 (failed) but he finally passed in 78 after he got 489/1200.

2. Arun Jaitley

Lawyer by profession, Jaitley is the Finance Minister of India.

He was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student leader in the Delhi University campus in the 70. In 1974, he became president of the University Students' Union in 1974.

At the time of Emergency, Jaitley was put under preventive detention for a period of 19 months.

After being released from jail he joined Jan Sangh. In 1977, Jaitley was appointed the president of the Delhi ABVP and All India Secretary of the ABVP. He was then made the president of the youth wing of the BJP and the secretary of the Delhi Unit in 1980, a short time after joining the party.

3. Shashi Tharoor

Tharoor obtained his bachelor degree in history from St Stephen's College in 1975.

At St. Stephen's in the early 1970s he founded the Quiz Club; he also revived the Wodehouse Society, which is no longer in existence.

Upon election as President of the College Union he relinquished the Secretaryship of the History Society as well as the editorship of the campus humour magazine Kooler Talk.

He was invited by St. Stephen's College to deliver the college's 125th Anniversary Jubilee Lecture in 2005.

4. Ajay Maken

Ajay Maken was elected the president of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in 1985, having the rare honour of being the only B.Sc Chemistry (Hons)- Final Year student to serve this post.

His victory as President, DUSU was largely due to the massive sympathy wave generated by the assassination of his uncle Lalit Maken.

5. Mani Shankar Aiyar

He obtained BA in Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, University of Delhi.

After graduation, he did a two-year B.A. in Tripos in Economics at Trinity Hall, Cambridge at the University of Cambridge which, in the Oxbridge tradition, became an M.A with the passage of time.

6. Vijay Goel

He has an M.Com. degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce and a LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi.

He was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was jailed during Emergency.

After his release from jail, Goel became president of Delhi University Students' Union in 1977 as a candidate of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Goel was the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) treasurer in 1974-1975.

7. Alka Lamba

Lamba began her political career in 1994 when she was in second year of BSc. where she joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and had taken the responsibility as Delhi State Girl Convener.

In 1995, she contested the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election for the post of President and won by a huge margin.

In 1996 she worked as All India Girl Convener for NSUI and in 1997 she was appointed as the president of all India NSUI.

8. Anil Jha

Anil Jha Vats is a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party and a former member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

He was elected as the president of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) for 1997-98.

He was elected to the Delhi assembly in 2013 from Kirari Constituency.

9. Vijay Jolly

Jolly started his political career at Delhi University as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and remained the president of Delhi University Students Union (1980-1981), before entering politics as a member of BJP.

10. Nupur Sharma

Sharma is a former student activist of the BJP and was part of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

She was elected as the president of Delhi University Students Union for 2008-09.

She completed her school education from the Delhi Public School in 2003. She did B.A. Economics (Hons.) at Hindu College of University of Delhi in 2006 and got a Law degree (LL. B.) from Faculty of Law, Delhi University in 2010.

She had unsuccessfully contested Delhi Assembly polls from New Delhi constituency against Arvind Kejriwal.
