Irom Sharmila who is facing criticism for abandoning her 16-year long fast and deciding to tie the knot has clarified that she would get married only if people of Manipur reject her in elections.
"I've imposed one condition on entering my personal life. If the masses ignore my new strategy and abandon or insult me, I'll begin a new chapter of my life," Irom Sharmila said.
After ending her 16-year long hunger strike against AFSPA on Tuesday, the “Iron Lady of Manipur” had revealed her plans of starting a fresh innings as a politician besides getting married.
Sharmila said that she plans to contest 2017 Assembly polls as an independent from Thoubal, the constituency of CM Okram Ibobi Singh of Congress.
She also disclosed that she was looking for "20 like-minded Independent candidates" to join her.
According to media reports, her boyfriend Desmond Coutinho was not present in the court premises when Sharmila was granted bail on Tuesday.
That Irom Sharmila’s decision to abandon her fast did not go well with a section of her supporters became evident when members of Sharmila Kanba Lup (Save Sharmila Campaign) accused the state government of brainwashing her to enter politics to stall the movement against AFSPA.
