In a bid to promote Telugu language and its education in the state, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has issued orders making the regional language a compulsory subject from standard 1 to 12 across all educational institutions in the state.
The order will be applicable to all schools in the state, private and public, and institutions disregarding the directive will be de-recognised, KCR said.
The Chief Minister was speaking at a meeting to discuss arrangements for the five-day World Telugu Conference to be held in Hyderabad from December 15 to 19 this year.
“There is no second option for the schools, both in the government and private sector. They have to offer Telugu as a compulsory subject in every class. Those institutions refusing to implement the government decision will not henceforth get approvals from the state education department," a senior official was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Rao also announced that commercial establishments in the state will now have to display organisations' names in Telugu on their signboards.
The two decisions will be placed before the next cabinet meeting for necessary amendment in the law and government will also bring a legislation in this regard, the official said.
KCR also sanctioned Rs 50 crore for holding the World Telugu Conference in Hyderabad, along with Rs 5 crore to the Sahitya Academy and Rs 2 crore to the Official Language Committee.
The TOI report said that KCR was motivated by vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, who had requested him to work for the protection of the language during a felicitation programme recently organised by the Telangana government.
