Tributes continued to pour in for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away last night after prolonged illness.

Tributes continued to pour in for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away last night after prolonged illness. 

Lakhs of people including political leaders and entertainment industry stars have been paying their last respects to the late AIADMK chief. 

After performance of the last ceremonial rites as per tradition, her tricolour draped body was shifted to Rajaji Hall in Chennai for people to pay their last respects to the departed leader. Jayalalithaa's close confidant Sasikala Natarajan was standing near her body.

The 68-year-old charismatic leader was in Apollo Hospitals since September 22. She died here at 11.30 pm on Monday.

In a series of tweets, Apollo said "She is on extracorporeal membrane heart assist device and is being treated by a team of expert doctors and critical care specialists."

The hospital also said that a UK consultant who had flown down earlier to supervise the 68-year-old's treatment has been consulted about the line of care being provided to her now.

 Extracorporeal life support is provided to a patient in need of cardiac and respiratory support. Since she was hospitalised in September, the Chief Minister has been in the care of lung specialists and cardiologists. 

“Doctors from AIIMS visited the hospital on Saturday, and after examining her health, they shared the good news with us that she has completely recovered,” AIADMK spokesperson C Ponnaiyan told reporters earlier in the day.
