Chennai: It's for the first time in last three decade that the same party has been given two successive terms in Tamil Nadu.

As trends show, AIADMK is leading in 129 seats out of 234 which puts it in comfortable space.

AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa was leading by over 5,000 votes in RK Nagar in the city against her nearest rival Shimla Muthuchozhan of DMK.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he called up Jayalalitha to congratulate on her victory.

"Had a telephone conversation with Jayalalithaa ji and congratulated her on her victory. Also conveyed my best wishes to her," the Prime Minister tweeted from his official account.

Captain Vijayakanth, thought of as the swing factor before polls, continued to trail in Ulundurpet assembly constituency and the 'Third Front' led by him failed to breach AIADMK bastions.

Most Exit polls have predicted that Karunanidhi led DMK will return to power taking cue from the earlier trends but Jayalalitha has stormed back to power.

Karunanidhi is 93, and in a wheelchair, but had committed to serving as Chief Minister if the DMK was elected.

Interestingly, BJP is also leading in two assembly seats.

Initial trends suggested  that both AIADMK and DMK were in a neck to neck fight but later the Jayalalitha’s party surged ahead with lead in 117 seats while DMK is leading in 81 seats.

Jaya's party is comfortably ahead and is doing really well in urban areas. The party made its presence felt in North Tamil Nadu which is considered Karunanidhi's stronghold.

Among the personalities, Captain Vikayakanth who leads a consolidated third front - the PWF - in Tamil Nadu is trailing in his seat. Like son like father, MK Stalin leads in Kolathur

Jayalalithaa leads in R.K. Nagar constituency by 1906 votes; Ganesan Santhanam, from Tiruchi, says DMK president M. Karunanidhi is leading by 2281 votes in Tiruvarur. AIADMK leading in Vepanahalli Constituency in Krishnagiri and in Tiruchi East. Sundar Subbaiah says AIADMK's K. Kalanithi is leading in Virudhunagar AC by 1495 after first round. AIADMK candidate Vijayakumar is leading in Tirupur North constituency by 87 votes. DMK's leading in Egmore; AIADMK's Parithi Ellamvazhuthi is trailing at the moment.

T he final results are expected to be out only around noon. If the victory margin of a candidate is less than the total number of postal ballots, the postal ballots polled will be taken up for counting again.
