Amethi (UP): On a day when Narendra Modi government completes two years in power at the centre, Union HRD minister Smriti Irani today launched a blistering attack on Nehru-Gandhi family in Amethi.

“We have achieved in two years what Gandhi family could not achieve in 70 years,” Smriti Irani said while addressing a public meeting in the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

Taking a swipe at the absence of Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, Irani said, “there are people who do not return after winning elections but there are some other people  as well who frequently keep visiting despite losing elections.”

She also targeted  BSP supremo Mayawati and said that the former Chief Minister also did not do anything for the region when she was in power.

“Amethi witnessed politics but no development took place in the region. I’ll have to bring development in the region.  Many people got the epithet of ‘behen ji’ but they did nothing for Amethi,” she added.

It should be recalled that Smriti Irani contested from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 and gave Rahul Gandhi a run for the money. Rahul had to personally visit many booths on the polling day to enthuse his supporters.

Irani had promised to the people of Amethi during 2014 general elections that she will keep  visiting the constituency irrespective of whether she won or lost the elections. She reminded the people of Amethi today that she has not forgotten her promise.

She will be spending the entire day in Amethi today. She is also slated to distribute e-rickshaws besides meeting the students of IIIT (Indian Institute of information technology)
