The Shiv Sena today retained the prestigious Mayor post of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with the support of the BJP.
Sena’s candidate Vishwanath Mahadeshwar emerged victorious after he defeated Congress’s Vitthal Lokare during the election conducted via a show of hands by the newly elected BMC corporators.
The election for the Mayor post was conducted by the outgoing Mayor Snehal Ambekar who gave both the candidates fifteen minutes to withdraw nominations from mayoral election if they desired so.
The results will be officially declared once each corporator puts down his vote in writing.
In elections for 227-member BMC held last month, Shiv Sena emerged the single largest party with 84 seats while the BJP finished a closed second with 82 seats.
During voting for electing BMC Mayor, the BJP corporators supported the Shiv Sena candidate while seven corporators of MNS were not present inside the Corporation Hall.
