Chandigarh: Makers of Udta Punjab found an unusual ally in Punjab’s ruling party Shiromani Akali Dal when they sought an inquiry into the leak of uncensored version of Udta Punjab on Friday.
Stating the party was against piracy of any artistic work, SAD sought a probe into how the film found its way to torrent sites.
Party’s spokesperson and general secretary Harcharan Bains said, “We support the demand for an inquiry in the matter since it is an abominable and shameful act. We fully stand by film industry whose tireless creativity and financial resources are sought to be laid waste by unethical acts like piracy.
Bains, however, attempted to connect the leak to Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh’s claims that he would screen the uncensored version of the film in villages of Punjab.
“Capt Amarinder Singh needs to come clean on the piracy of the movie. He, his party and the AAP are the only ones who have been talking of showing the uncensored film to the people. They owe an explanation to film makers and viewers alike,” he said.
Suspecting a political motive behind the leak, Bains said, “There appears to be more than commercial mischief behind this act of piracy against Udta Punjab. It is the more serious as someone seems to have purposely leaked the version with a clearly ulterior political motive. ”
