The Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu on Sunday alleged that the ruling AIADMK distributed Rs 100 crore ‘bribe’ to the voters for the forthcoming by-poll to the R K Nagar Assembly Constituency.
“Tamil Nadu is witnessing the large-scale distribution of money to the tune of more than Rs 100 Crores by the ruling AIADMK party to the voters for the by-election to RK Nagar Assembly Constituency,” Stalin alleged in a letter to the Election Commission (EC).
Stalin further requested the EC to disqualify AIADMK candidate E Madhusudhanan. “Take appropriate and necessary action against AIADMK and the erring officials and to ensure free and fair election RK Nagar Assembly Constituency,” he wrote in the letter.
Key candidates in the by-poll are AIADMK’s Madhusudhanan and DMK’s N Marudhu Ganesh. Rebel AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran is also contesting the by-poll as an Independent candidate.
Elections in the R K Nagar constituency became necessary after the death of the chief minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5 last year.
The election is also seen as a litmus test for the ruling party which is facing a barrage of opposition accusations including alleged corruption.
