Ahmedabad: Amid ongoing protests for reservations in jobs by the Patidar community, the Gujarat government today announced 10 per cent reservation for all non-reserved categories on the basis of their annual income.

Chief Minister Anandiben Patel told the media that those having a family income less than Rs 6 lakh per year will be eligible to benefit from proposed this decision.

The 10 per cent Economic Backward Class (EBC) quota will be implemented from May 1. The Existing 49 per cent reservation to SC/ST/OBC will stay protected. While the 10 per cent EBC quota will be beyond the existing 49 per cent quota of reservations, it will be applicable to those who are not covered under the existing quota system.

Gujarat BJP president Vijay Rupani said that the state government will bring an ordinance for the same on May 1, the foundation day of the state.

The decision was taken in Gujarat BJP core committee meeting attended by party president Amit Shah, Anandiben Patel, Vijay Rupani and other bigwigs.

The Patidar community has been demanding quota from the last one year under EBC. 60 per cent of the families, they say, are economically or financially backward.
