Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will be leaving for the United States today to be with his ailing mother and party President Sonia Gandhi.

Presently, Sonia Gandhi is in US for health check-up. Usually, either Rahul or his sister Priyanka accompanies Sonia whenever she goes abroad for medical treatment.

However, in view of the UP Assembly elections, the Congress president travelled alone to the US this time on March 8.

"Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi is travelling abroad for a health check-up. Congress Vice President, Shri Rahul Gandhi, shall travel there today to be with her and accompany Congress President on the return journey," party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a statement.

Sonia Gandhi is not keeping well since August last year when she fell ill during a road show in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

She took ill in August last year during a road show in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and has remained out of public gaze ever since.

The Congress president could not campaign for her party in the just-concluded Assembly elections in five states include Uttar Pradesh from where she is a Lok Sabha MP.

Reacting to his party’s worst-ever performance in Uttar Pradesh where the Congress won mere 7 seats, Rahul Gandhi had advocated the need to make structural and organisational changes in the party.

“As far as the Congress party is concerned, we do need to make structural and organisational changes and that is a fact,” he had said.
