Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was today summoned by an Assam court in connection with a defamation case for his alleged remarks against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Kamrup Metropolitan court has asked Rahul Gandhi to appear before it on September 29.

The RSS had filed the defamation case after Rahul Gandhi accused its members of not allowing him to  enter Barpeta Satra, a 16th century monastery in Assam, in December 2015.

The Congress vice-president  was expected to visit the Barpeta Satra monastery from where he was slated to start a foot march which was to end at a mosque.

Rahul, however,  did not enter the monastery as there were some women pilgrims inside.

The next day, he claimed in Parliament that some "RSS people" had stopped him from entering the temple.

"When I went to Assam I wanted to visit the Barpeta temple. The RSS people stopped me from going into the temple. This is the way BJP operates. They put women in front of me and prevented me from going in," Rahul had said.

The RSS accused him of lying and filed a defamation case against him.

Rahul Gandhi is facing another defamation case filed by RSS in Supreme Court after he held the Sangh responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
