Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is likely to take over as party chief from his mother Sonia after Diwali festival.
Sonia Gandhi has already indicated that the elevation of the Gandhi scion as the party chief could be done "soon". "Soon it will be done," she said, when asked by reporters repeatedly as to when Rahul Gandhi will be elevated.
Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest decision-making body, is expected to meet soon to decide the dates for the election of a new president.
The Congress organisational polls are underway and many state units have already passed resolutions urging Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party reins.
