Proving exit polls which projected a close fight between the Congress and debutant Aam Aadmi Party wrong, the grand-old-party today forged ahead in 76 of the 117 seats in the state Assembly.
Speaking to media here, Punjab Congress chief and party’s chief ministerial candidate Captain Amarinder Singh today credited the party's stellar electoral performance to president Sonia Gandhi and her vice president son Rahul.
"I thank you people of Punjab, my leadership Rahulji and Soniaji," Singh said.
Singh said the Congress MLAs will be meeting at 2 pm tomorrow to decide about the swearing in ceremony and the cabinet formation in the border state.
As per the current trends available, the Congress was leading in 76 seats after over three and half hours of vote count that began at 8 am.
Singh, who turn 75 today, won from Patiala urban seat by a margin of over 51000 votes. He, however, is trailing from the Lambi constituency.
Meanwhile, incumbent Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal today said that he would submit his resignation from the post tomorrow.
