Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra today hailed party’s vice-present Rahul Gandhi and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav as ‘two young and dynamic leaders’.
In a Facebook post, that comes two days after the poll alliance between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party was sealed, Vadra expressed confidence that the two leaders will together ensure victory for the alliance’s, marking an end to the BJP’s ‘winning rath’.
Lauding the pre-poll alliance, he further said that the ‘grand alliance’ will work in tandem for betterment of the state.
“The alliance between Congress & SP is not only an alliance between two parties, it is an alliance between two young & dynamic leaders- Rahul Gandhi & Akhilesh Yadav,” the post reads.
“My best wishes to them for the upcoming UP Elections. I am sure that under their dynamic leadership, UP will shine & become extremely progressive. Both youth icons will bring forth immense energy, brilliant ideas & implementation to transform UP into a world class state. Congratulations on the grand alliance!!” Vadra said in the post.
Vadra, however, skipped any mention of the role of his wife Priyanka in stitching together the alliance that appeared to have almost slipped away from the Congress’ hands. Other than ignoring the crucial role Priyanka played in finalising the seat-sharing with SP, the timing of Vadra's post also assumes significance as there is a growing clamour within the party for a bigger role for Priyanka in UP.
There are also speculations that Priyanka will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from her mother’s constituency, Rae Bareli. Sonia has been forced to stay away from political engagements due to ill health.
Several top Congress leaders have in the past favoured Priyanka’s entry into active politics but the Gandhi family could not decide on her role. They have said that Priyanka has the potential to emerge as a mass leader.
Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel even tweeted about Priyanka's position terming discussions with her as the ‘highest level’ of talks.
Sonia’s health has been fragile for some time, which has forced to scale down her political activities, a Congress leader said on terms of anonymity, adding that ‘it makes the perfect situation for Priyanka to enter in active politics’.
According to a Times of India report, party sources said that the decision to accord official status to Priyanka's work for the party was something that had been thought through. The reason behind Priyanka's growing footprint is Sonia's decision to slowly withdraw from politics.
"It is a fact that Rahul's dependence on his sister has increased a lot. She is looking after many functions discharged by Sonia as also the back-end operations of Rahul's office," the TOI quoted an insider as saying.
