New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is believed to be unhappy with the idea of MPs recommending 100% hike in salaries for themselves.
According to a report in Economic Times, Modi feels that MPs should not decide their pay and any decision in this regard should be taken by a body similar to the pay commission or that it be linked to hikes given to certain posts and ranks from time to time.
Reports are doing the rounds that MPs have recommended a 100% hike in salaries and allowances for themselves because they deserve a raise in view of their ‘good conduct’.
A Parliamentary Committee has suggested that the salary of MPs be raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh a month and a constituency allowance from Rs 45000 to Rs 90,000. If the committee's proposal approved, an MP will get 2,80,000 per month.
The committee, headed by the BJP's Yogi Adityanath has also recommended a 75% rise in pensions, and revision in salaries periodically.
The proposal is currently with the Finance Ministry. Soon, the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry will circulate a Cabinet note on the MPs salary increase to various ministries seeking their views on the matters.
To fund this 100% hike, the Modi government will have to shell out over Rs 250 crore per year.
The salary of MPs was last hiked in 2010.
