The secrecy around Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s health reached court on Monday when a social activist filed a PIL in the High Court seeking a detailed report from the government on her health condition.
The petitioner “Traffic” Ramaswamy submitted that the people of Tamil Nadu were eager to know about the health condition of Jayalalithaa.
The petition is expected to be taken up on Tuesday for hearing.
He has also demanded releasing of photographs of the meeting the CM is said to have had with her cabinet colleagues and officials in the hospital, where she is admitted.
Holding that Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan had reportedly visited the hospital, the petitioner said they have not given details about her health condition.
He also submitted that the police had blocked the roads leading to the corporate hospital where Jayalalithaa was undergoing treatment by erecting barricades preventing others to go to the hospital for treatment.
Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo hospital in Chennai on September 22 after she complained of "fever and dehydration".
Tamil Nadu Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Saturday visited her at the hospital and noted that she was "recovering well".
Rao visited the chief minister in the ward where she is being given treatment and stated he was "thankful" to the doctors who took him there and for explaining in detail the treatment given to her, it said.
"The Governor was happy to note that the Honourable Chief Minister is recovering well. The Governor appreciated the doctors for providing the best medical care and treatment," to Jayalalithaa, the release said adding the Governor spent nearly 30 minutes in the hospital.
The Apollo Hospitals has flown in UK-based Dr Richard John Beal to examine Jayalalithaa.
Speculations around her health continued even today and rumours continued to spread on social media.
Police arrested one DMK worker on Saturday and booked three others for allegedly spreading rumours about her health. A France-based blogger was also booked for allegedly writing that Jayalalithaa has been dead for days, police said.
AIADMK leader B Valaramathi on Saturday tried to put an end to rumours surrounding CM’s health.
"She needs rest as per doctors' advice and will return to good health." She said.
Opposition DMK has questioned the silence around her health.
DMK chief M Karunanidhi has wished Jayalalithaa a speedy recovery, but has urged the government to "put an end to the "rumours" surrounding his arch political rivals health.
